Así comienza esta novela biográfica, que relata la vida de Lodario Gavela Yáñez, médico asesinado por la Brigadilla en mil novecientos cuarenta y siete. Su vida transcurrió a lo largo de tres momentos muy intensos de la historia de España: la Segunda República, la Guerra Civil y los ocho primeros años del franquismo. Tejida con materiales sacados de la Historia, la Memoria y la imaginación, con una prosa minuciosa y un ritmo narrativo vivo, la obra cuenta la trayectoria vital de este médico y, a través de ella, de una parte de la historia de España en tres momentos y tres espacios: desde los diez a los veinte años en el convulso Valladolid de la Segunda República, donde vive en las calles los choques entre los fascistas de las jons y los obreros de Talleres del Norte, y en la universidad los enfrentamientos entre los estudiantes de la fue y los de la fec, lo cual va conformando su conciencia del mundo y le obliga a tomar partido ante los acontecimientos; la Guerra Civil, primero en un frente elegido, el republicano en Asturias, y luego en otro impuesto, dentro del bando «nacional», hasta el fin de la guerra; por último, en la comarca de Fornela y El Bierzo, como médico y promotor de escuelas o hábitos higiénicos, en medio de un clima de represión y persecución de los fugaos, hasta mil novecientos cuarenta y siete, cuando es asesinado por su actitud insumisa ante el régimen franquista y por atender a los fugaos a pesar del peligro, del que era consciente.

Pero las páginas del libro reflejan, sobre todo, la vida de una persona cuya actitud ética y compromiso con la libertad lo convierten en un personaje a la altura de los grandes héroes.
